In this last hang I would estimate that there was about a 45 degree angle when I was in the hammock, but still felt too tight. Is that perhaps due to tree distance? I tried to get about 30, but it felt too tight.

I thought I had this all figured out!

edit: With an 8.5 foot RL it was guitar string tight at the ~45 degree angle as well.

Here's another way to try it.
With no one in the hammock loosen the straps until you see the ridgeline sag 4-5"
Then raise the strap tie points at the trees until the hammock is at the proper height to get in.
The ridgeline should still be sagging 4-5 inches.
When you get in the ridgeline should be much looser.

Ah yes that is a good strategy, thank you. This should help me get a better feel for it.

When a RL is so loose, it doesn't seem like it will be doing much. Is it there to just get that final "perfect" asjustment?

They keep the netting up out of your face, Give you a basic guide for the sag and of course a place to hang things. It should not be supporting any of your weight.

    Hope this works for you?
