    Uninsulated 3/4 Underquilt?? Anyone??

Has anyone had any experience with an un-insulated 3/4 length underquilt? I have a Speer hammock and would like to use an underquilt but don't want to pack more down. I have extra clothes, etc. that I could put between hammock and underquilt. A $200.00 bulky underquilt doesn't seem necessary but the CCF pad with the SPE keeps twisting around during the night (I toss & turn).

Ok, I have to ask. What's the point of an underquilt if it isn't insulated? And if it isn't insulated, then it really isn't an underquilt anyway, is it? Maybe it's just me, but I don't get it.

Your idea sounds like a Garlington insulator. Check this and this out. You might find some more interesting stuff by searching for "Garlington Insulator."

I have used a HH SS silnylon sock on summerdays as a windbreak. Works great.
I think your idear will work ok.

We've often discussed how much a layer of nylon seems to add to the insulation qualities of something minimal like a Baby Orca. The Jerry Chair UQ is identical, but for one more layer of nylon, yet it seems to insulate better.

Perhaps someone has to make an uninsulated nylon 3/4 UQ so that we can find out how much difference the nylon makes!

The problem I see with the idea is that extra clothes will leave air gaps - in an underquilt, it's important to have the down fill the baffles, and have the shell of the quilt snugged up against the bottom of the hammock to eliminate gaps. Pockets of air will give you cold spots.

What you're suggesting isn't an underquilt but a Garlington insulator - you can take a trash bag and loosely rolled mylar blanket and create sort of a poor man's NeoAir, and it will insulate you pretty well.

Air standing still is a super insulator.

It would work the same as the pockets on a clark. I'm comfortable about 10 to 15 degrees colder in my clark than my eno. So it saves me from having to bring extra insulation on nights when it gets cool but not cold.
