The uncovered, exposed IX is the key to the weight. Of course, that requires a certain level of care but not beyond that required for other ultralight backpacking equipment. She would probably also not approve of the looks, that can best be described as "coyote ugly."

My UL conscience just wouldn't let me ad the dead weight of nylon to this thing.

OK, here is the performance report:

I just spent the weekend hanging with a 2 layer IX top quilt. The first night was 32 degrees and it wasn't near enough insulation and the second night was low 40's and it still wasn't enough. NO wind.

I was wearing 2 wool 190 tee's and a wool 330 hoodie plus a wind shirt on the torso. For bottoms I had a pair of medium weight wool base layer and thin nylon pants. On the feet I had 3 pair of wool sock (2 of them thick) plus 2 beanies on top of the hood.

    From now on, I'm going to do two things;
    1. Only use this quilt above 50 degrees
    2. Test in my backyard instead of the wilderness, oops

I had a down 2/3's underquilt and CCF leg pad that got me comfortably to the mid 30's before. But that was probably about the limit for the underquilt, too. So, while it could hold it's own, it couldn't help supply a warm fuzzy feeling to help out the top quilt.

Thanks for the update. Its kind of a bummer that it didn't go as low as you had hoped. But good that you're OK. It can be a loooong night when you can't warm up.
    Good luck,

Which part did you feel coldest first?

    Legs? Back? Torso? Arms?

When I have been caught out without enough insulation there seems to be a particular area that gets the coldest

I would have to say that I was evenly cold from head to foot. The good news is that did not have any condensation in the quilt, even though my tarp was wet on the first night.

    Thanks for posting the report.
That performance is consistent with what my expectations given:
-You had no cover on the IX
-You put such large longitudinal pleats in the IX.

My 2 layer IX TQ was comfortable to the mid 30s with less clothes, a 3 layer IX UQ, and no CCF pad. The differences that I can see are that mine has:
-only 1/4" tall longitudinal pleats in the bottom layer of IX,
    -a 1.1 RS cover,
    -a slightly heavier nylon lining.
-a drawstring at the top to cinch it up around my shoulders and seal out the cold/in the heat,
-and 6" wide RS extensions along the edges to act as "draft tubes" to help seal any air gaps along the long edges.

So, based on all of this, I'm thinking that Mac's observation in a different thread about IX being less forgiving of poor fit may be at work, as well as cold spots from having too large air gaps between layers.
