    10 minute, $10 Underquilt

Just posted directions for the easiest underquilt I've ever seen.
    http://gear-report.com/how-to-make-a...-sleeping-bag/

The basic idea is that you open up a rectangular sleeping bag with the inside facing up.
    • Fold in both sides so they touch at the middle.
    • Sew a grosgrain loop on the outside at each of the new corners
    • Attach those loops to your ridgeline with a prusik and carabiner/soft shackle
    • Adjust by sliding the prusiks

Pictured here with a bugnet tube and ready to get in (yes, my daughter's hammocks are leopard print).

Literally took me 6 minutes per UQ to sew on the grosgrain loops, and ~4 minutes to walk outside and attach to the hammock.

Result is double the thickness of the original sleeping bag and insulated my kids down to freezing 3 weekends ago.
You could also add other layers above the UQ if you needed more insulation.

I needed an UQ, but didnt have one. I used the same design except no sewing.

I held the corners in place at the head and tied a larkshead to them. I did not tie the other end to the ridgeline; I tied it to the tree. Repeat at footend. End result looked similar to yours.

Here is a pic. This was a quick 5 minute proof of concept so the ends have gaps, but you can close the gap by pulling more of the corners through the larkshead loop.

    Great minds... wwk10.
My son's hammock hung in my office all winter with shock cord larks headed to the corners, and looped around the end of the hammock.
Just like you mentioned, it sagged terribly. That is what got me thinking about:
    1) how to raise the ends
    2) how to do it in a way that didn't impact use as a normal sleeping bag.

Now that I think about it, this concept could be used with a no-bugnet hammock, as pictured, with triangle thingies, or even just shock corded to the head and foot end. Pretty flexible.

    I hear ya, brother.
It took me an hour to write it up and post to my site.
AN HOUR to document a 10 minute project!

I'm beginning to understand why my wife questions my sanity.

    Nice!

I recently harvested a zipper form a a sleeping bag I got at the thrift store and was thinking of ways to use it rather than give it away. Sounds like the thread injector will be humming tonight!

    Great idea!

But I don't understand the folding step. (I can be slow like that.)

"Fold in both sides so they touch at the middle.
Sew a grosgrain loop on the outside at each of the new corners "

Why not just zip it closed, lay it out flat and sew on the loops at the existing corners? If a bag has different thicknesses for the top and bottom, this would keep it even. This will also keep you from lieing on the zipper.
Also, if I add an extra loop or two along the sides, and bungie them to the ridgeline, do you think that would help with my saggy bottom?

Thanks RJ for the idea and thanks everyone for the input!

That is what I was thinking as well.

With both sides folded to the middle, do you end up with the folded ends separating underneath you? I am picturing the sleeping bag being double layered on both sides, but single layer directly underneath where it is most needed.
