    Hammocks and Art?

Ok so I'm a rather artsy person and was wondering if I would be able to draw/paint on the nylon of the hammock. I was thinking about using a sharpie to do this. Anyone know any info about this?

Also while trying to google this I ended up on a tutorial about how to cut ripstop nylon. Do you have to use special tools to do this or just a pair of scissors?

Thanks in advance for the help!

I think sharpie would do just fine. You can always test it before you do the whole project too.

Whatever you decide, PLEASE post pictures. I would love to see the outcome.

Well it maybe a while before I can buy the supplies to make the hammock then time to do the art, however I'll be sure to post pics for sure!

this is spray, but with more research you might be able to find liquid. http://www.kitebuilder.com/catalog/p...f5f7137b7c6667

You can use paint pens, Sharpie style permanent markers, and fabric paints.
But with the bending and folding that we subject our gear to when packing, your artwork will soon fade away or flake off. So your work will be somewhat temporary, at best.

Regular ripstop will absorb and retain the ink better than any ripstop that has a treatment or coating. Silnylon is waterproof/highly water resistant, and inherently does not absorb inks well, if at all.

Also remember as you lay in the painted hammock, the inks may bleed back onto you and your other gear or clothing. Not good to wake up with a face full of artwork or your $200 quilt discolored.

My understanding of this, was the real problem lays within the waterproofing of the fabric at the factory. I inquired about dying a tarp, and was told it wouldn't work unless I purchased one that hadn't been treated, add my graphics or color, then have it waterproof sealed.

I was just commenting about this in another thread. Great question. I look forward to all of the feedback.
