    Hanging in Ontario Canada

I am going on a fly in fishing trip near Lake Nipigon in Ontario Canada, it is about 100 miles north of Thunder Bay. There is a cabin on the lake, and I was going to bring my hammock to sleep in, mainly because of comfort, and the cabin really only sleeps 4.. but the other guys who aren't backpackers and aren't from there are concerned about Bears.

I have never been there, or packed anywhere in Canada for that matter, but it is my understanding that the bears are similar to Northern Wi, or Minnisota. Few and far between, black bear mostly, and the guide company is saying that they aren't a problem. So I am thinking it's like anywhere else and just follow the rules...

Anyone have any experience with this area? It is actually at the southern tip of Brennan Lake, and going in May if that matters.

    Thanks for your help!

I have not been that far north but from what I have read and heard you should not underestimate bears or any other wildlife. I friend at work whose cottage is no where near as far north have bears poking about. My question is how has the cabin been managed in the past. I recall reading that remote cabins are kept stocked in case anyone that is lost can further their survival. Hopefully the people that manage the cabin manage it well and keep food and refuse unaccessible so no bears come by when it is not being used. Just thinking out loud, I could be totally off.

So hanging in the trees would make you a bit nervous I would assume?

Depends. The cabin would be where food is prepared. When I backpack I sleep far away from where I prepare my food. If I were to hang far enough away from the cabin I would be more comfortable. It's really hard to say.

Hang a little away from the cabin, and have a great nights sleep. No worries.
Only black bears in Ontario, and there just like black bears everywhere else.

Although i'm not familiar with that area i would say your correct about just fallow the rules and your ok. The people who own the cabin don't want problems so they probably take care of the place so as not to attract bears. Those of us who grew up in Canada and live rurally or in the bush don't much worry about it and frankly the farther in the bush you are the safer you are with the bears you meet. When your there look for recent bear activity and don't leave your fish guts around etc. Personally depending on what time of year you go i'd be more concerned about black flies. If you want to ask some other folks who visit that area go online to
    www.wintertrekking.com and
    www.myccr.com
Lots of folks camping and paddling that area of the country.

    good luck

yep -what he said Don't let bear paranoia ruin a good sleep .worst case scenario ... they eat you after 25 years+ of at least a month a year in bear country i have yet to have a serious encounter with a bear, there are lots out there but you are much scarier to them than the other way around

never been in that area either but live in rural place and I always have been told that if you think you're fine, fish guts and other stuff that could attract them... in other words, follow the "rules" and if you don't feel safe do what you need to feel safe. personally I always have a bear bell so feel "safer" because something is saying I'm there... the worst I've had is a coyote laying 50' of my tent...
why should I have a rock, a root or anything else hurting my back in camping?

I'm familiar with the area around Quimet Canyon west of the town of Nipigon. No problem with bears around that area.

Enjoy your flyin and catch your limit. Have fish shore lunches every day.

    Go prepared and have fun.

Down here in Cornwall I have yet to run across a wild animal other than a stray dog. When it comes to bears it's a simple matter of numbers. .357, .44, .50 etc....
