slowhike's directions will get you there.. If you are coming North on I-77 the exit is # 83 (will be a left exit). This will be US 21 and will take you up the mountain and through Sparta,NC. Follow his directions to US 221 and then Hwy 93 to Hwy 58..The Grayson Highlands entrance will be on your right at:
    N36 36.739 W81 29.453 (or real close to these co-ordinates)

Hey Gumbo. I live near Savannah (and sometimes central TN). If I happen to leave from Savannah for this trip, the choice is I-95 to I-26 to Columbia and then you can choose I-77 per Slowhike's info or stay on I-26 thru Asheville to Johnson City/Bristol, connecting with I-81 to US 58 at Abingdon, VA and thru Damascus to Grayson from the western direction. Don't think there is too much time difference either way, but the drive across from I-77 is probably a better visual thing. Travel time for me to Damascus thru Asheville has been averaging around 7 to 7.5 hours from Savannah area, including a gas and quick food stop at Spartanburg, SC.
I'm going to try and leave on Thursday so that I can get the group site ready on Friday, plus I'm hoping the weather will be fair enough where I can at last get a chance to actually see the highlands and do a short hike.

Thanks for all the helpful info!

Not sure what route we will take yet, but so we are thinking of heading that way sometime Thursday, so I'm planning towards that end.
