Only real downside to soft shackles is they're not as easy to clip on and off, especially under load, as carabiners. Still they're a great piece of kit. Small ones can be made from 1.75" and 2.2" ZingIt and LashIt as well (not for hammock suspension use).

I know someone posted in the past that they used Amsteel for dog leashes, which turned out to be much stronger and cheaper than the store bought ones.
