Oh, I forgot about that guy who made a Cuben fiber hammock. Anybody try one? With a bag pulled around a Cuben hammock, the Cuben would create a vapor barrier to protect the bottom of the bag and a space blanket on top of the sleeper would make a vapor barrier on top. Hmm. That would shave the Nano 7 from 7 ounces down to what, about 2 or 3 ounces if you made a Cuben fiber hammock of the same dimensions as the Nano 7. Right? Hmm.
I to love the idea of an ultralight forum. Maybe a sub-forum in the general hammocking section. But...
I feel like the majority of us are very weight concious to begin with. Many threads already talk about lightest options with comfort obviously a big consideration. Also as mentioned, there's not a whole lot of products in hammocking that are super ultralight. Everything most of us use is the lightest, or close to the lightest option we have without sacrificing the comfort of let's say a traveler for a nano 7, at a 5.5oz difference. Our quilt manufacters can't go any lighter, unless they use cuben, but that's a huge price for only ounces more, when quilts already cost $200-$300. Most of us would save the extra for more gear.
As far as pack base weight I've been lucky to be at around 11-13lb base weight. But that because I don't have a lot of gear, I just make it work with what I got, and its far from ultra light gear. I guess I just don't have enough cool stuff to have a heavy pack, haha.

I like the ultralight approach and have found that I can easily get a pack down to 12-14lbs. That's with some comfort items and a 1.1 double WBBB. At my weigt 240, I can't seem to get my hammock weight down any lower, sure would be nice though.
It is nice to have a pack so light that I can stop and fish without having to take the pack off.

Right I agree and I believe that's one of the reasons that HF decided not to put a ultralight forum on here. Too much double posting . . . which I totally agree with.
I'd still love to see an ultralite hammock person have an ultralite store like Gossamer Gear. When I go to the GG site, I know that the products have the Glen Van Peski seal of approval so I don't have to question the lightness of the product. And GG is very up front that you have to take care of their gear. They try to make it as durable as possible, but being ultralite is the main goal. I understand this.
I want someone out there to make this ultralite hammock camping stuff easier than it is right now. And to keep up to date with all improvements. Rock's site is a great place to start. Now if he'd just sell all the gear he uses out of his house, then I'd be in line as a customer.

It looks like the "Right-Angle Hammock" prototype #1 is going to be a success. I haven't finished all the pockets to prevent line tangles and store gear at night, but I've been sleeping in it for a couple of weeks. Prototype #2 will be ripstop, insulated with Climashield, but Prototype #3 will be Cuben with down insulation. Stay tuned.
