Whipping Question - About to make DBL 1.1 w/zip

I have a bit of a wait while my materials are in transit...

I've been reading up on whipping and the options and consequences there...

My plan is to make a 1.1 oz DBL layer and zip on/off bug netting. DBL layer to have options for embedded pad, though I do have UQ...

I may not put on the bug netting right way...since I wont need it until June/July but need the hammock for mid-March....

I have lots of questions, but won't put all of them in one thread...

    To the questions...
    1. I see from many of the excellent directions here, that the last 8 inches of the hammock body on each side have to be sewn together into a tube to allow a "landing pad" for the zipper.

I see how a "standard whipping" can be done with this tube, but what other options are out there with this tube. It seems the "W" method (also at the bottom of Jeff's page) would not be possible?

...so basically looking for whipping experience of those who have zippered hammocks...

    2. I've seen a few options out there for folks who have zippered bug netting and a structural ridge line that goes through the whipping. Has any method gained popularity over others...?

    Many thanks!

Sounds like you are planning a HH clone from HC4U's instruction thread. I have built several from those instructions but instead of whipping the ends, I sew a small channel and gather the ends like a Warbonnet style hammock / see Knotty's instructions for a gathered end hammock. Everything else is basically like the HH clone except I use a gathered end & the result for me is very comfortable.

...also any comments on the current thinking regarding running a structural ridge line through the whipping would also be a great help...

I've seen a few methods out there on the forum, wondering if any have become mroe favored than others....

Unless the hammock has a net, there's no reason to put the structural ridgeline through the whipping. Attaching to the suspension just above the whipping works nicely.

Since my hammocks have attached bug nets I run the ridgeline through the gathered end before I tightend the gather. The suspension slips through a loop on my ridgeline before it is attached to the hammock with a larks head. This picture shows what I am describing:

The grey amsteel to the left that crosses the main suspension is the end of a fixed loop in my ridgeline. I find this set-up works well and still leaves enough of the gathered ball for me to use as an attachment point for my UQ suspension.

    Good Luck!

Many thanks, Dave...this comes pretty close to what I was envisioning...

I lay mine out flat, with the sewn ends in the middle and the ridgeline through it and then fold it together accordion style one each side of center. I whip around the works with some mason line and loop the ridgeline over the whipping.
