Rain Man, you have lots of really nice bamboo there! Do look into curing and various ways of drying it. May even want to make yourself a long drill bit to hole through the nodes. This aids in drying and curing. But in the short term if you have anywhere to stand it up, barn or garage or basement, it helps keep it from warping.

Grab your torch or a fire and play with curing. Good Luck!

    thanks TurtleLady!

Not sure if this has been tried to reduce splitting. Only have read page 1-7 of this thread. In place of tape would whipping the bamboo ends like whipping a rope reduce the chance of splitting?

Though I have no experience with bamboo, I'd say whipping with rope/twine would do a great job. Try to use a waxed natural fiber line. It will look better than synthetic, and the wax will reduce the chance of slippage.

turtlelady, here it is a year down the road and still your tripod stand concept SHINES. I am happy to find an idea I can use to make a stand that is so easy to move around the yard or whereever, strong and not expensive, my kind of stuff. Thanks.

Call for photos to the posted here!

You are welcome, Old4hats. I am so pleased the idea meets the needs of folks around the world, and that the concept has been interpreted by many of them to meet available materials and needs.

Today I was sent a private message with a link to an album, to see a new stand made in Florida, inspired by a another version of the stand in Florida. Cool networking, eh? It saddens me that there are many stands out there that are not being shown here in this thread! I want to see them all. They need not be made of bamboo to be shown here. Please post so we can all see!

My most recent stands have been made of aluminum and EMT conduit. I must heed my own words and figure out again how to post photos here, now that I finally have a new computer. I am currently in a motel in Alpharetta GA with version 6, a stand that fits into a small walking golf bag and whose longest segment is 36" long. I sanded wooded dowel segments to fit inside the EMT leg sections. The ridge pole is in four segments.

Inspired by Rainman's truckload of bamboo photos, I visited a Bamboo Garden ( www.booforyou.com ) last week while vacationing in the Gulf Shores AL area.
I bought some very thick walled, cured bamboo, that seems very strong. My hope is to make the ridge pole segments, connectors, and the legs all of bamboo. Hopefully it will come in lighter than the EMT+fence rail stand.

Again, please post your photos if you have not already!

With much joy in our HF fellowship, Turtlelady
