This is a link that discusses why they came about. You can actually pay to stay at one of these at a campground in the Netherlands. However, if you look at the pics it appears that these things have some pretty negative effects. Numero uno is that the trees appear to be leaning due to the weight of these things. Second, in one of the pictures you can clearly see where the bottom attachment is cutting into the bark and beginning to strangle the tree.
For these to have been designed for literal tree huggers to camp out in, they don't seem to be too tree friendly.
Since many folks seem to think I'm crazy for wanting to hang a hammock instead of using a tent like a "normal" person, I think I'v (or should I say "we've") earned the right to think this idea is a bit off the mark.
Love the creativity, not so sure about the practicality.
