Welcome UHFox, I'm a hammocking noob too. Great place to hang and to get great advice and ideas from the many good and experienced folks on HF. I got a good piece of advice posted by KerMegan on my Intro Post. Which I'll share with you-
KerMegan wrote: "and the best advice I can give is keep an eye on the 'trip planning forum'- likely there will be a group gathering you can get to, and it is an excellent opportunity to see many set-ups and brands of gear all in one place. or peruse the Diy gear making arena, and get ideas for making your own, or getting started on the cheap (especially if you can beg/borrow a sewing machine- aka 'thread injector', or know someone who sews and might owe you a favor..)
have fun with the learning curve! it is all good.. KM (who has more then a few projects in progress -also known as UFO's or Un-Finished Objects..sigh)

P.S. - Do you have a AT section hike route planned out yet?
I hike with SCISSORS cause it makes me feel dangerous ... LoL
Hey there from North-East-ish Canton. You're just a hop & skip from me.
Thanks for the friendly welcome, everyone. I am going to be spending a lot of time on this site, thinking about hammocking and learning what I can until the weather warms up a bit.
HWS - I'm thinking that my AT section hike in June will be Damascus to Pearisburg.
UHFox,
Thanks for your reply. FYI: I'm trying to make it to the February 2011 NW PA Hang. Scheduled for Feb 18,19 and 20th. If work doesn't interfere. I was going to catch up with the hangers on Friday. It's only a 3.5 hr drive from Cleveland.
"Their plan" is to set up 200 yrds. from parking lot Day 1. Then do a 12-14 miles total hiking loop day 2 and 3 day.
"My plan" is to hook up with the hangers at the parking lot. Help set up. Do some cooking and eating and CHECK OUT THE GEAR and Hanging techniques! Maybe a worth a road trip.
To check out this tread:
Go to: Forums- Hangouts, Campouts, and Trip Planning - Find and click on- February 2011 NW PA Hang.
Enjoy HF
