I use dutch biners, but my brother uses the marlin spike hitch method. He cut up one of my old carbon arrows and uses those. I was thinking a piece of aluminum gutter nail would do the trick until we came upon an old broken arrow out in the barn.

^^^Boot... Not trying to be safety patrol or anything, and also not implying that you didn't already think about it, but, I'm not so sure I would want the match heads being able to contact the striker inside the match box. Chances are nothing would come of it, but with my luck I'd wind up burning a hole through my pocket or worse. Maybe turn the matches so the heads are at the bottom of the box? Nice idea with the strikers on the outside though. Hope you don't take offense.

If you're wondering, no I would not use a live round as a toggle.

no offense what so ever.......i did think about this a day or two after i did it, so i put the shake test too it trying to get one to light and couldn't......so i figured it was pretty 'safe', never did think to just turn the matches upside down though, thanks for the idea (just went and did that to all the matches) that should eliminate any chance for premature lighting, thanks

Sounds good... with my luck I have a tendency to think about worst possible outcomes. Murphy seems to ride shotgun with me if you know what I mean

I use empty rifle shell cases. I had a few laying around and they have worked great.

Sawed off aluminum tent stakes*: 8" stake, cut into 2 three inch toggles, grind / file the edges so they are smooth, less than 1/2 oz each.
