Kayt - thanks for sharing these videos and your obvious knowledge! I am in need of some bias tape to do a zipper mod on my son's HH Scout and did the obligatory search on Hammock Forums to see if ther was a thread on DIY Bias tape - low and behold you popped up w/ just what I need!

Very clear instructions and I feel ready to try some myself. One thought I have is; what would it do to use a coated ripstop to make the bias tape? The urethane coating on the inside face would serve to prevent fraying and may help bond the sides together when pressed. Any reason this would be a bad idea? I have some black coated ripstop on hand so I think I will give it a try.

    Thanks!

What a beautiful hammock! Wonderful color and worksmanship.
I like big hammocks - I cannot like.

GvilleDave -- I don't see that it would be a problem at all. In fact, I'm curious how it will go. Please share your findings with us!

Trout -- Why thank you!! I sure had fun with it. I still need to add the bug netting, but I fear that will still be awhile due to my other "to do"s.

If you are using the bias tape to form a channel for cord you are going to want to make it bigger than you normally would. The urethane coating is sticky and makes threading the cord harder than you might expect. The Grand Trunk ATHH used coated ripstop and getting the cord back through the channel to go from tarp to hammock mode was a real pain. It was doable but difficult without a good sized bodkin.

If you double fold the nylon it won't fray once it is sewn on. Searing the edges will especially guard against that. Pressing the urethane might present a heat problem. I would want to test it on a scrap and have some iron cleaner handy. One thing you want to avoid is melting either the nylon or the coating and have it gum up the works.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

The Urethane coated RS worked great. There was no benefit or problem ironing the coated RS. All in all it worked fine and there was no fraying at the edges and I did not heat seal...
