Great video, creativeKayt I am impressed.

    I have just one question...

What is Bias Tape and what is it used for? Am I missing something from the videos?
I see the final product, but I dont understand the benefit of bias tape rather than just hemming it up

Please explain it so this dumb ol'e country boy can understand....

While many do OR teach, you do both really well. I'm fascinated by popups and flexagons and that diagonal matchup & cut is magical! Enjoyed all your vids - thanks!

Yep.... hemming it would serve the same purpose. It give me a little more durability where my tie outs are, because I did the double stitching, but the savings is negligible when compared to time spent. Honestly? More than anything, I just wanted the contrasting color for my hammock at the edge because I like the finished feel of that particular look.

Here's the finished product and you can see the burgundy bias all the way around the edges of the hammock.

Too, some people use bias tape when they have a bunch of thick fabric (i.e., thick canvas that's been treated with water/fire proofing stuff) because it makes it easier to sew through. You don't have as thick of a wad of fabric to try to force through the small space beneath your sewing machine foot.

Here's another angle showing the shelf tie outs. I just used the shock-cord I had on hand and have since changed it out to something more suitable.

Oh I see... so instead of folding it under a few times, you lay it flat and use Bias Tape.

So that leads me to my next "Q"

Why not just cut a LOOOOOONG strip of fabric and use that?
    Why lay out a square
    cut it on a diag.
    move bottom to top
    mark it
tube it one line off and then cut the strip out of that?

It seems that a long strip would be easier.

(again... I am just trying to learn and understand...)

So you use bias instead of grograin right. Also same as above, do you really need the stretch of real bias or can a 120'' continous peice of material be used to form the bias tape instead?

If Kayt's vids aren't in the video forum, they definitely should be put there. Personally, I think they are deserving of a sticky in the DIY forum. Vids of the actual step by step process of making a hammock with as much detail and patient explanation (such that even someone like me can pick up what is being put down) are relatively few. Near Shug quality I'd say!

(Now Kayt, if you can just learn to pick, sing, do impressions, juggle, do comedy, make some mean bbq all while riding a unicycle - why you'll be all set!)
