DIY Double Hammock & Pads

OK - want to bounce an idea off everyone here.

I am just about to jump into DIY gathered end hammock and posted this in another thread but got no answers so putting it here as its own thread...

I want to make a double layered Gathered end hammock with a twist: I want to stitch across the hammock a box to hold a Gossamer Gear Thinlight Insulation Pad 1/4" the 40" x 61" Wide one.

The box would start where my neck is and extend toward the foot end 62". Then I would stitch down the side at the level where when you slide the pad in it fits halfway up the far side. Maybe add some velcro on the opening side to lock the pad in.

My MS Paint skills are lacking so I hope this makes sense: The Solid lines are stitched thru both layers - will they hold up or will the stitches pull the fabric? Gray is the pad itself. I want to use this hammock for three, maybe four season camping.

I have a diy double layer and a GG pad and I dont think you will want or need anything to hold your pad but the double layer. I find once it is in that static cling takes over and the pad is "glued" in place. You probably will want to be able to change the angle of your lay so sewing a pocket will prevent this. Good luck . Did you sew your two layers together on one side or just sew the sides of each and keep it open on both sides?

I sewed both layers together leaving a 24" opening on two opposing corners. I whipped the end using the warbonnet style whipping which is very easy to do.

I don't know how much this may help, but the Warbonnet Blackbird double-layer hammock has one side completely sewn shut, and the other side is sewn shut halfway, allowing a pad to slide in through the head end.

If I were to make another double layer, I'd first try only sewing together at the ends and not down the side at all. The areas I left open to insert the pad are a bit too small after the whipping, so getting a pad in and out is a real PITA, especially with pad extenders on . If I found that completely open sides was too open I'd sew just a one foot section right in the middle and try that next.
