    Setting a Claytor up quick!

My friend owns a claytor jungle hammock and we're going to do some winter camping in the future. The problem that I see with his hammock is that there are numerous, little ropes to tie up. Of course you could have the bug net on your face and not have the tarp up, but in most cases both will be needed.

So I'm thinking my friend will be bloody cold and won't have the patience for all the knotting and ropes. So, is there a faster way to set up a claytor jungle?

He is trying to convert to a buckle system so that would help... but still.

There aren't a lot of little ropes at all. A ring buckle system would speed up strapping it to the trees, which is what I've done with mine. Those nylon 1/2" straps stink, and I'd like to see Tom replace them with something better.

Two guys for the bug net, and those can be tied off with a taut hitch, which is a real easy knot to tie even with cold fingers. The same knot can be used with the four guys used for the tarp.

A Hennessy takes the same number of ropes, I believe, and a Clark takes more if you're using the stock tarp and guying it out properly (as opposed to the method described in the instructions). Given a little practice with the taut hitch and the use of a ring buckle (or similar system) it shouldn't take more than about four minutes to hang the Claytor, probably as little as half that long.

It takes 2 guys to hang the bugnet? And 4 guys to hang the tarp? Takes quite a crowd to put a Claytor up fast then...

Just kidding... no need for violence, I'll see myself out.

I haven't used the Claytor Hammock, but I know what you mean when you talk about winter camping and a setup having too many details to deal with.

I've abandoned or made major modifications to more than one approach because of such issues. I didn't see the problem in my backyard or in moderate weather conditions but I sure did it freezing or very cold and wet conditions, especially with a little wind involved. You have to get down to bare hands and very thin glove liners to deal with tying off small lines and you are working against a clock before you have to stop and rewarm your hands... and the rest of your body may not be doing all that much better while you are basically standing around.

Obviously minimizing the number of small lines to deal with is a good approach. Beyond that maybe some of the quick connect gizmo's might help, I've never messed with those. The figure 9's might help in that you may can use those with gloves on?

My Claytor goes up fast with ZERO knots to tie.
    A. I have short webbing going through the ends of the hammock of which the ends go into a biner.
    B. After the biner I have a cinch buckle and 12 feet of webbing on each side with a biner on the ends of the webbing.
    C. I have 10 feet of 1/8 cord with mini biners on one end for the bug net.
    D. I have figure 9 gadgets tied to a 1 foot cord which is tied to the bungee that holds up the bug net on each side of the bug net.

    1. Attach the 12 foot webbings to the trees using a biner.
    2. Attach the mini biners on the ends of the 10 foot bug net cord to the trees in the same tree-side biner.
    3. Attach the end of the hammock with it's biner to the short end of the cinch buckle loop. Pull out slack according to your first guess.
    4. Walk to the other tree.
    5. Attach hammock with it's biner to the short end of the cinch buckle. Adjust height and hang of hammock. Hammock is hanging.
    6. Attach the 10 foot 1/8 inch cord to that end of the bugnet using figure nine gadget.
    7. Walk to the other tree.
    8. Attach the 10 foot 1/8 inch cord to that end of the bugnet using figure nine gadget.
    9. Walk to center of hammock, sit down and watch everyone else doing their thing to their hammocks.

Predictions are risky, especially when it comes to the future.

I was just wondering about those myself. I had recently abandoned the f9s, as neat as they are. Because I had gotten so proficient with just popping a truckers hitch ( slipper style, whatever it's called) in the line where ever I needed it positioned, it seemed more time consuming when I had to reposition the f9s. But maybe with cold hands, the advantage might go again to the f9s?

What he said! Except that I don't use mini biners on the tarp tie outs. I have two permanent loops on my line....one at the end for a long tieout and one about half way, for a short.
