What do you use for a toggle?

After switching to Whoopie slings to reduce weight I wanted a light toggle. First used Al tent stakes, then cut up some Al thick-walled kids arrows. Now I am using the dreaded Carbon-fiber arrow pieces. Would I use them If I hung on the edge of a cliff or below freezing?? Noooo, but 18" off the ground, Yes. No failures for me, guess I got my pieces (~6mm) from a quality source. Just like the DIY aspect and being able to carry "Extras" w/o too much weight.
Stormcrow says he just uses sticks found at campsite, to remove just break it.

Another here using a kid's weight aluminum arrow. Uber-cheap at Wal-mart. Had to give my birthdate to buy it as I guess they consider it a weapon component... I told the cashier "the only funny thing is I plan to cut it up into pieces"

Old tent poles. Oh wait, I said the "T" word. Sorry gang. Anyway... I cut the shock-cord and used a pipe cutter to make them 2 3/4". One of the poles had about a 135-degree bend and I've used it a couple of times in practice hangs. It makes a soft "U" shape and I position it up so if there were any slipping of my whoopies they wouldn't necessarily go anywhere. I've got about 30 feet of these old poles so I'll never run out of toggles. If I attend a group hang and anyone wants some, I'm more than happy to rid my garage of more stuff.

3/8" PVC pipe. Mainly because I'm a pack rat of sorts and have lots of pieces laying around.

At the Fairfield hang I was given a pair of toggles that work great. Made from tent poles I believe. Here's a pic.

I use a piece of 1/4" aluminum round stock from Lowe's. Cut it about 4" long, and bent a loop in one end for some paracord. Works fine.

Please PM me your address and I will send to you the pair of spikes I have just made for you. They are made from an aluminum arrow shaft and have 2.75mm Black Glow Cord cordage attached for you to secure to your webbing. I picked up a bunch of arrow cut-off's from my local Gander Mtn. and Gargoyle then smoothed the edges and drilled a small hole thru them for the cordage.

They are very light weight, and the glo cord will help prevent them from being lost.

The most important thing to remember when selecting your spikes...is that they must be hard enough to prevent compression, which can make them hard to remove, but even though it may be a royal PITA to remove them if they do get compressed it is not impossible.
