I'd read an article in the doctor's office years ago about winter camping in a military surplus hammock and though that sounded like the coolest thing ever -- no pun intended. In July I splurged on an Hennessy.

I am still getting the hang of it -- ok, let's let that one be a pun.

FanaticFringer, looks like we live fairly close to each other. Maybe we can hang out sometime?

2 years ago when I woke up really sore one morning on the trail. I thought hammocks would be a cool idea, I found some guy named Jeff's site, and he told me about this really cool forum site!

1 year and appx. 2.5 months, starting Sept. 06. Started off with a bang. With zero experience ( not even an hour in the backyard, because I couldn't keep my butt off the ground with my skimpy trees that were too far apart, and time was short.) So, fly to Wyoming, drive on dirt road to 9100 ft, start hiking, go 8 miles. Pull hammock and Super Shelter out of pack as sun is starting to set, and tried to figure it out. Slept in it between 22* and maybe hi 30s-low 40s for the next week. Had mucho trouble with everything, but the superior sleep time could not be denied, so there was no going back. One way or another, I was going to make that thing work, even in the cold and wet. Discovered the oh so helpful Hammock Forums, WB and Sgt.Rock and some others. Then nothing but the occasional back yard ( or local park) overnighter ( down to 18*) and lots of 1 hour naps in the back yard hammock stand and on local hikes, until this Sept. Off for another 1 week hike in Olympic National Park. All was sweet this time. Fast set up and take down ( leaving my previously skeptical/ridiculing tenting buddies in the dust, so to speak), and warm, dry comfortable sleep every night. A thing of beauty. Since then, 2 overnighters ( one at Neo's shindig) and more 1 hour naps and breaks. Looking forward to my next long trip.

got to keep your tents, still use mine more than a hammock

Who cares about showers, gourmet food, using flush toilets. Just keep on walking and being away from it all.

Not sure how to answer the poll.... does trying to find a hammock that will work count? Does making a hammock count? Am I considered a total newbie because I just got the Bear Mountain and have only slept in it once - and had to come inside due to a serious coughing spell? (I haven't been well lately)... whatever, I've been researching and tweaking the accessories for quite a while.

As Ewker mentions, tents work better in some situations, but I'm coming over to the dark side more and more.

Neo, It's been so long I'm not sure where the tent went. With the Claytors I don't need the tent. Sorry I could not make your last hangout but 14 hours driving was more time than I could work out. -- John
