    Discussion of DIY Hammock Material

    So,

I am looking into making my first DIY hammock and I am debating on the material and was hoping y'all would weigh in. Here are my main questions. If weight plays a factor here, I way about 200 pounds.

What material(s) have you used in your DIYs?
Is 1.1 ounce ripstop strong enough to be used?
Is 1.1 Ounce risptop too stretchy to be comfortable?
Has anyone tried momentum for their hammock?
What about cuben (even though it is super expensive, like momentum)?
Have you noticed that DWR treated fabrics don't breathe as well?

Any other discussion on hammock material will be welcome. Thanks y'all.

Lots of folks using 1.1 for hammocks, but to be on the safe side 1.9 would be better or a double layer of 1.1. That also lets you get a pad in between if you leave a gap in the side for it and it should help keep the skeeters from biting through if your bug net doesn't go all the way around the hammock.

I have used 1.1 and its been successful. I am only 160 lbs - you may have different results.

It definitely stretches and has a different feel than 1.9. Comfort is a relative term. I regularly sleep in a diy 1.1 - but my 1.9 is more comfortable. How much comfort do you want to trade for the extra weight?

Haven't tried momentum. I would tthink it would not be strong enough. I have used materials with light DWR treatment without any problem. I think they should be fine, but not the material of choice in the summer.

cuben is out of my league. It doesn't breath, but some have used it to make hammocks - try a search, I just a thread recently.

Thanks for the thoughts on1.1. I am not a gram weenie, but 3.00$ yards of 1.1 did catch my eye. I may go 1.9 for the comfort.

I was mostly just curious about the cuben as it cost an arm and a leg per yard, but I tried searching and didn't find much discussion of it as a hammock with the exception of this thread, and it doesn't really describe how it is in use. I am mainly wondering whether its lack of breathability in a gathered-end hammock would be an issue.

I spent last night in a 1.1 single, and I'm 210lbs... A double layer would be the way to go. As soon as I have some spare cash, I'm going to start my WBBB clone 1.1 double....
