I have thought about something similar for my bridge. Tarp long on one side and wrapping under and covering ends on the other side. Looking forward to seeing what you conclude the final advantages over seperate tarp/sock combo.

Love to see the new ideas and innovations Keep them coming.

Yes. I have not weighed it yet, but I have totaled the materials. That's why I call it "about a pound". Compared to the 18 oz Molly Mac Gear IX Hammock Sock. it is about an even trade to remove the weight of IX and add the weight of the tarp. Epic is heavier than 1.1 breathable nylon, but I used the lightest Epic I could get.

I like the concept...but I have a few questions/suggestions. A: why does the tarp not go to the other side as well? Seems to me like only one side won't be enough coverage. I know I sure wouldn't want to feel ran/snow beating my back and side during the night.. Also just make it a diamond shaped tarp or a regular cat cut hex..those fancy pointy thingy's are kinda useless IMO. The way I would like to see it is with a full covered hex tarp and the under part just as you have it. This would be a very nice winter set up...I think it would be a bit over kill for the summer. Just my .02 FWITW
I miss my 4.8Lb base weight as a ground dweller...But I sure DON'T MISS the ground.

The un-tarped side is waterproof/has an outer shell of waterproof fabric (think he said silnylon). Not sure on his points, could be good, could be bad. Good wise it would serve as an end block to break wind while still giving a view, bad could be annoying to set to stop a driving rain (not totally sure as haven't used a tarp like that).

That is impressive, the Hammock Sock packs down really small!

    WOW OH WOW!!!!

The past few months I have started to notice that I actually only use about 2/3 of my tarp*. While I love my tarp, having to carry 1/3 of a 13.5' x 10' tarp that doesn't see actual use, I really like this idea! A LOT! Granted, there would still need to be fabric on the closed side as your demo shows, but there is no need to have a HUGE tarp to do what (To my eye) 1/3 of the "Extra" fabric I carry can do.

My tarp will still be used in the cold or serious bad weather if I know it is coming, but, , , ,

Looks like I need to get a part time job just to pay for Hammocking / backpacking gear I need!

    * I use almost all of the side the opening to the hammock is, but except for rain & wind protection, I use almost none of the "back" side of the tarp.
When you have a backpack on, no matter where you are, you’re home.
PAIN is INEVITABLE. MISERY is OPTIONAL.

My first hang in the prototype tarp sock was a disappointment. It was a dry night last weekend, light NW wind, about 40*F. My breath ended up condensing all over the inside of the silnylon side of the sock. The other side, covered by the Epic curtain, was free of condensation. The sock did not breathe well enough at all.

If I can get some eVent, I might try another prototype.
