I was sure I'd get plenty of input, and yeah...if there was a perfect tarp...somebody would have already struck it rich.
I think the most important feature for me is true protection from the elements (mainly rain and wind in my case) followed secondly by weight, color isn't so important. I'm a guy that was rucking 60 lb only two years ago and once owned a purple pack. I guess I'm a neanderthal in touch with his anima?

Personally I am fond of the rectangular tarps with extra ties on the long sides- provides lots of shelter, multiple pitch options (diamond, a-frame, "baker") and in a bad storm can stake down the "mid"-points and pull the corners in to provide more wind breaks. mind you this will require more stakes and extra ties but that is why we carry extra cord, yes?

I am with ftroop94 and KerMegan on this. I used to be near 45 lbs for a 3 day winter trip; but I am getting too old for that. I currently have a Noah 12, because it was in the budget. Eventually I will go with one of our vendors and get one custom made with similar dims, but at about 1/2 the weight.
I do like my comforts, but the hammock is providing me with that at much less weight than a tent and multiple pads. I like my large tarp for multiple set up options and to ensure good coverage in poor weather. Eventually I may spring for different tarps for different conditions, but that is a $$$ issue.

I received an email showing Hennessy is giving a free Scout Zip with the purchase of $139 or higher hammock. Not a bad deal for those with tykes. I'd have listed this in FOR SALE for those to see, but I'm a noob and don't have enough posts to list. It's not like I'm receiving anything for posting it...but hey I follow da rules!
