    This trip inspired by...

    ...Whoooo Buddy Productions!

My son turned 9 today, and for his birthday he asked for hammock gear and for a trip out with Dad. How could I say no!

So last night we packed up and headed out to a local campsite, and spent the night. It got down into the mid 40s, and we both slept warm. I put him in the tried and true pad and foil windshield guard configuration, and I tested out a new DIY UQ.

We also tried out a Swedish log for our campfire...it was a moderate success. I didn't cut it down far enough, so we will do it better next time!

My son talked my ear off about hammocking, and gear, and spent the evening speculating what the great god of Hammocking (the mighty Shug) would do. He even commented on the fine pork flavor of his DIY Bushbuddy cooked cocoa

All in all a good time! Best of all, we came home this morning to his three jealous siblings who already have their upcoming birthday gifts chosen!

Thanks to the forum for the many great ideas and motivation, and thanks to Shug for "televising" his adventures and lighting up the interest of the next generation!

Your son will remember this birthday for years and years to come. Way to make memories. You sound like a great dad.

All due respect to Shug, I'm sure in a few years your son'll be saying..."What would dad do?"

That's awesome. Congratulations. I have a nine year old myself and she loves hammock camping. It really is a great way to spend the time together, isn't it?

My only regret is that I did not get a chance to meet the mighty Shug when I lived in Minnesota, or go on one of his frozen camping trips with him. I have to be content with watching the videos.

Great stories like that make me want to call my dad and re-live some of our times spent outside camping, snowmobiling, fishing, etc. Gotta love the memories!

That was great, thanks for sharing.

He will always remember this. I remember my first camping trip with my father when I was 5. It still blows him away when I tell hem that I remember.
