I was thinking about my previous post and need to make a clarification. I was referring strictly to woven and knit fabrics. The use of zigzag to avoid tear lines may have merit when dealing with non-woven fabrics. I have almost no experience with those.

In general I would not suggest stitching to work with non-wovens. I would rely more on tape or other joining techniques. But in the event that stitching is used I can see the point in using a zigzag as opposed to a straight stitch.
