Is this fabric good for a UQ?

    Hi!
I´m new to this forum so this is my first post!
I am from Sweden so bare with me if the english isn´t great!
I working on a DIY underquilt that i´m planning to fill with down, and started looking for a fabric to use for this, and i stumbeled upon this (http://cgi.ebay.com/PARACHUTE-RIPSTO...item587fd6be8f)

Now, i´n not so shure if this fabric is actually usable for an UQ, but it´s cheap, and i´m kinda on a low budget so the cheaper, the better...what do you think?

If you're going to use down, you're going to want a "calendered" fabric to make it down-proof. Also, that fabric is only 38" wide. I'm headed to work, so I can't look now, but I'm pretty sure I've seen wider fabric by the same company.

    item specifics - Fabric
    Condition:
New: A brand-new, unused, unopened, undamaged item (including handmade items). See the seller's listing for full details. See all condition definitions- opens in a new window or tab... Read moreabout the condition
    Type: Crafting, Outdoor, Sewing, General,
    Length/Amount: 3 - 5 yds Material: Nylon
    Square Size: -- Pattern / Style: --
Width: Up to 45'' Color: Green
I have some problems with the description post. 3-5 yards does not constitute new and unopened in my mind. These are remnants. That's not bad. It is merely an inaccurate description in my veiw. Up to 45" wide is too vague to set well with me. You won't get what you need for a full length quilt from 5 yards of 45" fabric. Even less so if it is narrower. There is also no indication of the weight of the fabric. Don't spend good money on fabric that you don't know the exact details of.

If you are interested in pursuing this I would suggest you open a dialog with the seller to determine _exactly_ what you would be buying. It is most important that it be down proof as above, that means calendared. The sellers feedback rating would seem to indicate that he is willing to answer those kinds of question.

Remnants are not a bad buy. Most of the casual DIY folks probably buy remnants when they are available. I personally would prefer 60" fabric as it would mean less seaming. You could get away with one piece 5 yards long instead of two. But anything less than five yards would not be sufficient for a full length quilt. You might be able do a half length _but that's all I would count on from 5 yards of thinner fabric.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

that materials is very narrow. Get from BWDD and ask about overseas shipping. I'm sure he can pack the 5yds needed for a quilt in an envelope so it will ship cheaper.

Hi again! I actually found some ripstop in a old fabricshop...the problem is that it's not calendared (i guess that calendared is when it's kinda glossy on one side), my qestion is ofcourse if its doable anyway? It's no high quality down i'm putting in, it's from a old down jacket...

The calendaring is what (helps) keep the down from slipping through the fabric.

You can try it, but you'll probably find stuff poking out of it in no time.
