If you want to sharpen your soapstone:

Round style stone can be sharpened by a childs pencil sharpener you get at Walmart for about a dollar.

Flat style stone can be sharpened on a bench grinder, hand grinder (neither recommended around fabric), a simple piece of sandpaper or just rubbing it on the driveway/carport.

Along the same lines as a grease pencil....

Try a lumber crayon from lowes or hd.
I just tested one out cause I am working on an UQ tonight and it seemed to work fine. I am only marking on the inside so no worries about seeing it on the finished product.

I've had luck (to avoid bleeding through) with both Soapstone marker and Chinese marker.

Quilter's marking pencils are available at fabric stores and come in many colors. They work like colored pencils or crayons, but the marks disappear with a little water. I have found that on ripstop the marks actually will wipe off with your hand quite easily, so easily in fact that I have to be careful that they don't disappear while I am manipulating the fabric!

I use marking pencils to mark small lines (white for dark fabric and blue for light fabric) but for longer lines, e.g., marking lines for baffles, I use chalk rollers.

    Sharpen with fine sandpaper.
Since I retired, some times I stay awake all day, some times all night.

If you are talking pencils, I'd be cautious about having too find a point and damaging the fabric. The pencil set I bought from JoAnn came with a pencil sharpener and an eraser suitable for fabric.
