    Hang height for 16' distance

Just got my first hammock, a WBBB 1.7 Dbl and I am just loving it.

I want to hang it, and eventually a WB Traveler from a porch pole to the side of my house. My wife is ok with the hardware on the house, but I only get one chance at drilling for the eye bolt.

The distance between the hang points is approx 16'. What would be a good height for me to put the eye bolt? Will a Traveller work at the same height as my BB?

    Thanks,

    -jeff

Hello....First off, congrats on your new hammock.. Head to the woods and find 2 trees the same distance you have at home and experiment with what makes you happy.. If I had to guess I would say 6.5 ft. But you need to feel it for yourself, besides, it's a great excuse to get away.. Good luck..
We would be one step closer to world peace, if everyone slept in a hammock..

The Traveller and the Blackbird are the same general size. If the suspensions are the same, they should both work at the same height. At 16', you'd probably suspend from 6 to 6 1/2 feet. Since I'm 6' 5", I'd be a bit above my eye level. I shoot for having my foot end about 5-6" higher than my head end.

Have a couple helpers hold the suspension straps/lines to the pole and the house , and take a good look at it. Being a 16' span you'll have some adjustment with the suspension.
Once you find a good heigth, mark the location.
Popular choice is to have the hammock at a chair heigth, but thats a personal preference.

If the bottom of the hammock is about 2 feet off the ground then I think attachment points at about 7 feet is good to get the 30 degree angle from the hammock to the attachment point.

How about doing a test hang in the woods. That way you can get the feel for how you like the hammock to hang and then take all you measurements back to the house.

I appreciate all the replies so far. I live in Southern AZ so trees in the back yard are out .

I'm waiting for my 3 Season Incubator before I head out for an overnighter but I was trying to hang in my backyard first, to get things sorted closer to home.

Looks like the consensus is about 6.5 feet tho.....I'll try the suggestion of holding and eyeballing.

    Thanks!

What if you were to take some ratchet straps and ratchet them around the post and use that as an anchor point. Just loosen and slide up and down according to how high you want/like it until you have found what will be the perfect height for you and the hammock.
I miss my 4.8Lb base weight as a ground dweller...But I sure DON'T MISS the ground.

Couldn't you just wrap the straps around the poles a couple of times for the "test" hangs? Once you get it right, mark the spot and drill away.

Cool! I have no porch poles so have opted for a hammock stand.

Be very very sure the porch pole can stand the sideways pulling of the hammock.
Collapsing the porch for the sake of a good hang would make a great campfire story but ...

obmit and mugs - I only have a pole on one side and then the wall of the house on the other. If I had two poles to hang from I could experiment all day .

I've used the suggestion of a helper at one end and the pole at the other and the hang height of ~6.5' works out pretty well for me.

Only a few more dyas and my 3 Season Incubator should be here. Then it is off to the piney woods I'll go for some real world hanging.

    Great site, great info, thanks!
