Roadrunnr72,
I first tried some Mule Tape that says 1800 on it to start with. I tied loops in it like the ENO Slap Straps to make it adjustable. Let me tell you that Mule Tape does not hold knots very well and as the knots pop out you hit the ground quick and in a hurry. Great idea, but No!
It was just in my yard with nice soft grass. It was more bothering when I first used the ENO Slap Straps and in the middle of the night I was sitting on the ground from the nylon stretching. Always something new to learn from all the folks here on HF.
I definitely need longer tree huggers. The trees here in the Pacific NW are a wee bit too big for what came with my HH.
We must all learn to live together as brothers--or we will all perish together as fools. MLK
I got ratchet straps from a harbor freight. I didn't have a way to cut the hooks off so I took a metal chisel and kind of wedged it into the gap where the hook is bent around the strap and widened it enough to slip the strap out. Took about 10 minutes.
You're gonna need a bigger hammock
i did this for my girls hammock and to get the hooks off i put the tail end of the loop in my bench vise then beat the hook end with a 4lb sledge. took about ten good whacks to get the enough of a gap to get the straps out but that consumed maybe 30 seconds each. Ive tried all sorts of other different ways (hack saw, dremel, chisel in gap, bolt cutters etc) and this has proven to be the quickest and easiest way to get those stubborn hooks off. you just need to make sure the strap cannot be crushed in/against the jaws of the vise
...in it for pics.
I bought mine at West Marine. It was $1.09/foot for 1", 600 lb, polypropylene webbing. My wife sewed in the loops for me on her sewing machine. I also bought my Amsteel Blue there.
I think it was a little more than some of the on line places but I was near the store and till I factored in shipping it was probably about the same cost.
I have found that webbing and AmSteel purchased online is MUCH less expensive than what I would find at my local marine store. I think they wanted almost 4 times as much per foot for the Amsteel... and double for the webbing.
