    Steel rings from strapworks?

    Hi everyone,

I want to start off by saying I'm new to hammocking and love the forums, they have really helped me out. My question is: Will these steel rings from strapworks work like descending rings? I want to order all from one place if I can.

    Thanks,

    Gerber

Those are welded rings!!!!!!!!! From what I have read I would stay away from them due to some failures that have been reported. You can order all of you ring buckle suspension needs from Paul at Arrowhead Equipment. I have some of his rings and they work great. Changed over to his Cinch Buckle suspension system and love it.......

A solid weld is stronger than the metal around it. Or so I was told when I was trained in welding. It's not the weld that concerns me but rather the wire size used. They are sold for belts and tote straps. Relatively low stress applications. Not knowing what the wire size is, not that it would do me any good if I did, I would expect a small gauge or a softer alloy for those. I like strapworks a lot and have purchased a lot of webbing from them. But I would not suggest their rings for suspension use.

Most widely available rings are not tested or recommended for human loading. The highest I've seen is SWL 300#. I've used them cause they were cheap and they didn't fail me. But as soon as I could move to climbing rated rings I did so.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Hello and welcome. May I suggest looking at HF member pgibson's store Arrowhead Equipment for straps, rings and any other things you may need.. He'll have what you need and you can support a fellow members business. Paul is awesome to deal with as well.

More importantly are they as thick as the omega pacific or SMC rings. For a given thickness aluminum will be lighter. And the thicker the ring the less the rings will act like scissors and damage the cord when employed in something like the garda hitch

You can get them from here: http://arrowheadequipment.webs.com/a...s/show/1128958
    or here: http://www.rei.com/product/471123

FWIW I was using the SMC rings from REI (the link I gave you) for quite some time with not one issue, no damage to my straps, my girlfriend also had the same one's and had no issue's!
