I mark my quilts as handmade on the customs invoice as i have heard their is less/no duty on handmade goods(and my quilts are all made by my own hand). Though i haven't had that confirmed. I too love to make gear for myself, it's fun but expensive since after i finish 1 piece i get an idea how to make it better so i have to make a bunch of them before i move on as i can't keep from trying whatever new ideas i have.
