anyone have any experience with Madura stands?

    Hey everyone,

I am going to be going on a boy scout troop campout in a few weeks and understand it is out in the middle of a field with no trees. With that being said I was curious if anyone has tried the Madura stands? I was thinking about putting one on each end if they work ok. Anyone have any feedback on them? Thanks!

I'm curious about a Madura stand. I've never heard of it and Google doesn't come up with anything. Would you mind explaining what it is? Anything that might help hanging in an area shy of trees I'm interested in.

Do you mean the Mandera stand made by Byer?

Here's a link to our thread where stoikurt mentions using the Byer Vario stand for a similar campout, and it giove photos of the stand in it's broken down state, so you can see the size of it. Not for backpacking, but if you;re driving to the campsite, for $50 more than two Mandera stands, you have smoething with more substance and could be used also at home.

That said, I have never seen a Mandera stand in real life, so this is only a suggestion.

The site says the stands are only 36 long. That is not long/high enough for camping hammocks.

    Build your own

    leeinmemphis,
Those look good, but if you are looking at something like this, it seems a bit expensive for a troop outing. Try making your own. Use broomsticks or other suitabe rigid struts for the ends and lash them with a sheer lashing; you could even lash this in advance and pack them pre-lashed. Then for security, triple stake each end. Look at the current edition of the Pioneering MB book for this. The triple stake technique is commonly used for monkey bridges spanning 45'+, and holding the weight of a grown man. The force of a hammock with a 10-12' span would be much less.

Experiment with this in your backyard before you go on the campout. Figure out the right height and angle of your mounts as well as the proper span for the right sag.

In fact, I might just try this and keep them packed up in my car in case we show up at a campsite with no suitable trees (like a camporee at a fairgrounds or some such)....

    Good luck!

Thanks everyone for the info! I have talked to a guy at work and we are going to try something with some 3/4" pipe. I should have it together tomorrow evening and hope to have some pics by this weekend with the hammock installed. I'm going to try this before I spend alot of coin on a manufactured system. I have the pipe sitting here at the office and it isn't a big deal to put it together. Thanks again!!!!

leeinmemphis-- pipe stands have been made rcently by shdaowmoss, and most recently by Sgt Rock. The photos, esp for SRock, are very helpful as a guide if you're making one. Anyone have the link? It was within the last month.
