    Mosquito Season?

I'm going on a hammock-camping trip on the weekend of the 24-26 of Sept. in the ADKs of upstate NY, and am wondering which hammock to bring...

The choice hinges on whether to bring my HH (with its bug-netting) or one of my hammocks without beg-netting...I have always been told that once the nights get consistently below 50, the mosquitoes are done for the year...

Does anyone have experience/input as to the accuracy of this?

I wouldn't mind saving the weight/space of the HH on this trip (I'm trying to get under 25 pounds and rocking my Granite Gear Virga), but don't want to get eaten alive each night for my troubles...

    Thanks,

    Jamie - nfa

Prolly won't be any skeeters at night then. But for me the bugnet also adds some warmth and reduces condensation on my TQ in the cooler temps. I use my bugnet all winter long too for these reasons. Where in the adks will you be going?

You should be fine. I did the AT section of NY 3 weeks ago. No problems then with the skeets. I think alot has to do with the lack of rain.

Are you going to take any bug protection for when you are not sleeping? If so, some permethrin on clothing and outside of hammock and some 15-20% Picaridin on any exposed skin right before bed would probably keep them at bay all night even if they were out. (I don't mind slathering up with Picaridin, it is much more pleasant to use than DEET) Of course then you would have the weight of bug dope, but maybe you would have a bit of that any way, for when yo are not in the hammock?

I always pick my Wind River, WY hikes for when I know the mossies are done for the season, by about the 1st week of Sept. But I still always take some bug dope and a head net, because I know what torture the Wind River Mossies can be when they show up, it is not worth the risk unless I went even later in the season. I have seen a very few mossies in Sept, one time. Can't take the chance.

This last weekend in north MS, I wore treated clothes( hat, tee shirt, shorts, socks) either alone or sometimes with Picaridin on skin. I was never aware of a single bug. My son felt them nibbling on him as the sun was setting, though he didn't actually see them. So he sprayed on some DEET, probably haphazardly. A couple of hours later, he found a tick crawling under his tee shirt at the shoulder. So, the bugs were there, but they never bothered me.

How much weight does your netted HH cost you, compared to your other set up?

We had a warm October last year and skeeters were terrible. Even tho we had some cold weather prior to the warm spell, it did not kill them all. The survivors were very hungry.
Maybe grab a small piece of netting or toulle to throw over your head? Almost zero weight penalty. A 4'x4' piece could be worn during the day too, if needed.

For the weight difference, I'm not going to take the risk...I'll be rocking the HH for this trip...

    Thanks for your input!
