Canoe trip with portable 2x2 stand pictures

This past weekend my son Steve and I were to canoe the Spoon River but rains Wednesday & Thursday caused the river to get too high. Instead of cancelling, we decided to take on the Illinois River from Pekin to the Banner boat ramp. The wind was not in our favor both Sat. & Sunday, blowing up river 15-25 mph both days so we spent most of our time on sections that were not effected as much by the wind. We fished, played in the water, built campfires and hammocked. I have attached a few pictures but more can be seen in my album. I would like to make a shout out to 41vi4 for the stand ideas and Tinker for the T-7 hammock.

Thanks for the report and pictures. Your 2x2 hammock stand looks interesting. It looks as if the ends are bolted together so that they will pivot closed,. In the forth picture there is a piece of PVC pipe on your ridge pole. I assume that this is used to connect 2 shorter pieces of 2x2's together to make for easier transport. What are the measurements of your end pieces and ridge pole?

The ends that form the a-frame are drilled and have 5/16 eye bolts going in from each side. In the middle is a 5/16 double female connector with a 1/2 washer that allows the frame to pivot together. The ridgepole is bolted to one of the legs so it also pivots together with the others. All parts are 6 feet in length and the pvc is holding the ends of the ridgepole. When tightening the ratchet straps it pulls the ridgepole apart a few inches which causes the bow shown in the picture. The ridgepole helps when putting up the stand but has little or no value in the strength of the overall setup. The key is to run a line from one a-frame to the other to keep it standing up until you hang the hammock.(see picture 3) I have attached a picture from an earlier prototype but will give you the idea.

Looks like you had a good trip, Kevin. I know the weather was great, aside from the wind. I'm glad the new stands are working out. Nice pics!

What type of stakes did you use? I tried something similar and had problem with the stakes pulling out under too much weight.

I use 30" cable trapping anchors. I purchased them from an on-line trapping supply dealer along with the driver. In the rocky sand along the river on this trip I only needed 1 on each end. When the soil is all sand I set 2 on each end approx. 1 foot apart and hook my strap into both eyelets. The trick to getting them to work is...angle them toward the hammock instead of away like you would if using a solid bar type of anchor. If you angle them away from the hammock the cable will cut thru the soil and cause slack which in turn will cause the a-frames to get loose and wobbly. As you can see in the pictures, I did not even have to set these the total depth of 30", there is about a foot of the cable sticking out of the sand. On the bottom of the cable anchor is a toggle of sorts that when pulled tight pivots to create the holding power.

Nice photographs. I enjoyed them. I know the IL River very well, paddled it many times, Asian Carp and all.

Q: Nice stand, but why didn;t you just hang from the riverside trees?

Good question, we built the stands to use on the Spoon River where the sandbars are large but the banks up to and in the tree areas are very brushy. Since we already had the stands built and the canoes loaded for our trip we decided to take them with us to play with. We did not use the stands for overnight sleeping since the banks of the IL river had lots of trees to use.
