Suggestion on knots and suspension webbing and carabiner...

I have 2x 15 ft webbing from strap works that has loops sewn on each end.
    25 ft of armsteel rope.
    2x lightweight climbing spec carabiner.
    1 grand trunk parachute hammock

I was thinking of stringing the armsteel rope through the channels on my hammock, then tie the two ends of the rope to my carabiner.

The carabiner will clip on top both of the loops on the webbing after I wrap it around the tree a couple times.

    Questions.

    1) What's the easiest/strongest knot for tying the rope to the carabiner after it's been looped through the channels of the hammock?

    a. Is there a strong loop that I could just tie the rope (would the double fishermen's knot work using a single rope?), this way I don't have to tie any knots every time I want to setup my hammock. I can just clip the carabiner to the loop.

    2) Is there a special way that I should wrap the webbing around the tree?

    Thanks!

Or should I skip the channels and just tie it like this guy?

Amsteel is slippery stuff, it doesn't hold knots well. Learn to splice and make a whoopie sling with the amsteel.

Whoopie slings would make the easiest set up and take down but the way you describe would work fine too. As jeepcachr said, Amsteel can be slippery but knots like a bowline hold just fine. Take one end and run it through the channel of your hammock and finish that off in a bowline. That will leave you with a single line of amsteel running up to your treehugger. Tie another bowline where ever you need it to hang your hammock at the right height.

If you cut your amsteel into two 12.5' pieces that will allow you to eventually make two 6' whoopie slings which is just about perfect.

Check out Arson;s recent video on changing out his ENO suspension. It may help you out. http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=21723

Another idea is you could make two fixed loops and get a set of buckles, now you have a adjustable webbing suspension?

I'm going to work on making my own whoopie sling.

How is this video guide? Will a figure 8 be strong enough to make the dead eye loop?

Since you have to run a bury for the adjustable eye, you might as well run one for the fixed eye too.

A figure 8 may hold, but making a fixed eye wont take that much longer and will have a much better appearance.

This video was linked to the very first Whoopie thread by Slowbro. Good ifo and other than the size of the rope being different, its spot on.

A double fisherman's knot or the butterfly knot are the strongest knots of this type. See study here: http://www.caves.org/section/vertica.../knotrope.html

You can learn how to tie them here:
    http://www.layhands.com/Knots/Knots_...eButterflyBend
    http://www.layhands.com/Knots/Knots_...FishermansKnot

The double fisherman's knot will probably be impossible to untie after loading it.

I'm working on using knots and friction hitches in my 1/8" amsteel to achieve an effect similar to Whoopie Slings. I just love knots. I'll let you know when I work out all the kinks.
