My buddy got married at Pine Grove, been there kayaking a few times too. Another buddy goes there once or twice a summer in the Camper.

Just got home from a beautiful weekend at PGF SP. Perfect weather....for me anyway... a little cool at night for ZQ.

PGF SP has changed in the last ten years! There are now several restroom and shower houses throughout the campground areas and park, concession stands, new bridges, and of course the AT museum.

Being Labor Day, the park was packed with visitors. Bicycling the railway path, hiking up to the Pole Steeple rock outcrop on the AT, swimming in the old quarry, and lots of picnickers kept everyone busy. The Iron Masters hostel is closed for renovations. Didn't get to go in and take a look.

A hang at this site would be very cool indeed. Larry is going to check with the park management about us coming on Earth Day? Sometime in April I believe. I took a look around the group camping areas and there are two side by side areas full of trees that would work for hammockers. There isn't a pavilion real close, but a few Easy Up canopies or large tarps would do the trick.

I'll email him and let him know there is definite interest on our part. I'm curious how big he wants this to get. I believe he wants this to have educational exposure for the general public as well. Sort of a "scratch and sniff" type thing for those unaware or just getting started in hammocking. Would be a lot of fun, especially with the diversity in our crowd......set ups and personalities!!

Lastly, I'm thinking it would be also an opportunity to display the innovations that have risen from our group as well as the typical things we use. Whoopie slings, Figure Nines, Cinch buckles, Dutch Clips and Biners, underquilts, hammock tarps, and all the various modifications.

Stay tuned, I'll post updates when I find out more information from Larry.

His son was very interested in my setup when they came to our campsite to visit. I suspect a new convert is in the making.

ZQ hasn't turned to the darkside yet, so will probably come but stay at a campsite in the campground where there is electric, showers/toilets within 50 feet, etc, etc. Maybe some other female non-hangers would like to do the same? They could reserve some sites and be happy all weekend as ground dwellers!!

    noobie interested

I'm looking at DIYing this winter and am very interested in going. I've never actually "hung out" before, but I figured why not. I'm a DIYer with everything so if I'm going to start, I'm going to make my own gear. By the way, love the site and the people on it!

Emailed with Larry tonight and here is his response to my questions. A hang event next spring looks promising. We need to come up with dates for him. Here's his email to me.

    Tim,
I can’t answer all your questions right away but I don’t see any big obstacles. I talked briefly to the park manager last week and he was positive about the general idea. I’d need a few dates before I can check back about the specific facilities. There are several picnic pavilions and we’d need to reserve one for your raffle.

I would want to advertise this as an educational event and it would be great if people could wander through the area. We could restrict it to a specific time if you’d like. I don’t think a Friday arrival would be a problem as long as we arranged to have the group camping area available for Friday as well. I’d also like some programs right outside the museum that weekend – maybe some talks and demonstrations – and would like to involve kids as much as possible.

The main thing on your end would be to come up with a date. Last year the park had a lot of activities on Earth Day and that might be a good time for it.
I did read the thread and appreciated the many positive comments.
    Best,
    Larry

Do we have a good area with trees. If I remember correctly South of PG has cabins. The park area is mostly treeless. I think there is tree and flat area north of the lake, but if you go North on the AT it becomes steep.

Dutch, the group areas are very accommodating for hammocks. I suggested to Larry that he reserve two side by side areas. I'll probably take a drive over there with the video camera and post some shots of the park. I think it will work out well for a hang site.

BTW, Earth day is Friday April 22, 2011.

I met her & she does exist! Great lady too!
But what else would you expect from 2Qs other half? Good folks!!!

This sounds like an exciting opportunity to show & teach hammocks & their advantages, (including their low impact on a site) not only to those that visit the Earth Day event, but also a few State Park employees as well.
I too will something make and joy in it's making
