There is one issue though with putting the MS hitch in Amsteel, and that is that the toggle has to be able to take a lot more pressure (because the surface array of the cord is much less than the surface area of webbing.
While a trail stick works fine as a toggle in webbing, I would not trust it as a toggle in cord. So the gains you get by cutting the amount of webbing carried in half are offset in part by the weight (if that's the issue) of a good toggle. I've used a round aluminum Easton tent stake, that works.
