I got a definite "Maybe" from Jon yesterday. Actually he said: "Get a helmet & we'll talk" so I took that as a "YES!"

DUDE, I did the Dragon in my pickup about 6 years ago, OMG Of course I'm in for that.

I wonder if Jeff & Nancy at the Hike Inn outside of Fontana would let us stay a night?

I'm going to the Linville hangout, so it needs be after that.

    camping at the dragon

most people don't realize the best camping at the "store" is up the hill by the NICE bath house. it is a steep up hill lose gravel road from the grassy camping area. walking works but ridding is iffy. easy riding in from wheelie hill, all wooded with a truck path vs a road. another good mc campground with tree is Willville at meadows of dan va and also blue ridge mc campground at cruso, depending on wher you want to go. the week of october 11th works best for me the leaves should be turning by then.

Don't even DARE to ride into their parking lot on a motorcycle! They despise anything and anybody on 2 wheels. I have stayed there many times when I was in the area hiking and have talked to them about the motorcycle issue several times. They make no bones about their feelings about 2 wheelers. I have ridden past there many times on my bike (which is very quiet) and wouldn't think about stopping just out of respect for their feelings. It's too bad as I always enjoy seeing them both.

Are there any National Park Campgrounds in the area worth looking into?

There is one just inside the park from both Bryson City & Cherokee, about a 30 & 45 minutes drive from Fontana. & (It's been a while, I was 18) a small very nice one at Abrams creek sort of NNW of the West end of the dragon. So we sort of have both ends covered. I have never stopped at the one near Bryson or Cherokee But I believe they are both like the one at Elkmont & I like it there. There is also a nice one in / near Cades Cove.
None have showers. But I know a spot in Gatlinburg where that can be dealt with if need be.

Sad to hear about the Hike Inn policy towards Bikes, Jeff n Nancy is good people otherwise. Treated me very well.

Me too. I always looked forward to seeing them and getting some of Nancy's salsa! They are subjected to crotch rocket noise and other loud bikes all the time, I am sure it gets old after awhile. Part of living so close to the Dragon.
