    Blackbird vs Traveler with net

What are your opinions on getting a blackbird vs getting a traveler and net?

I'm trying to make a decision, and it basically comes down to how much I value not having a net permanently attached for times when I do not need it. So, what are your pros and cons of having a net permanently attached?

    Welcome to the forum.

The lay for both hammocks is the same, so it essentially comes down to the shelf. Do you think the shelf would be a valuable feature for your camping style.

I think they are both fine hammocks, but personally prefer a more open and netless hammock whenever possible. So the Traveler suits my choice best.

I don't think you can make a wrong choice between them.

I struggle with that decision on a regular basis.
    No suggestions, sorry.

have to agree with angrysparrow, if there are no bugs i don't want to see a bugnet. traveler is a great hammock. as for the shelf, can't miss what you never had.

Have any of you used the blackbird and let the net dangle to the side?

The shelf would be nice, but not essential.

You can flip the netting over the Blackbird and still use the shelf. Just take the tie-out line from the zipper side and secure it to the same stake as the shelf line. Then you at least have a half-open air hammock and a shelf.

Of course I do. It'd be silly if I didn't.

Wait, same lay, no shelf? Traveler doesn't have a footbox, right? I thought that's what created the shelf?

No, the shelf and the footbox are both pieces sewn to the edge of the fabric bed. They meet up with the shape of the netting.

Here and here are two posts where Brandon (warbonnetguy) described the construction.

if you are confident that you like hammocks for camping, buy the bb, unless you know for a fact that bugs aren't an issue. otherwise, get the traveler. if you find that you like hammocking, which you probably will, you can always buy the blackbird for when bugs are a problem
