Thanks for the pix of hanging from a car door. It' really surprising that you can get away with it. Seems like you'd peel the door down like a Yosemite bear doing that. I've been seriously considerring having a reciever hitch put on my Toyota Echo and build a removeable pole to stick into it. Just back up to a suitable object and string it up.

get about 10' of tubular webbing for $5 at REI and loop it across the roof.

For anyone considering hanging from the roof rack on a car, I tried this a couple of years ago and pulled the rack right off my car, landed on my butt (glad I wasn't hanging high) and spent the night in the car. Worst. Night. Camping. Ever!

Across the roof and to the B-pillar on the other side will be most secure for a smaller vehicle; the only thing to really be carefull of is the weather stripping.
I've hung between the roll bars of 2 jeeps (not too original), which can be done betwee 2 of ANYTHING, really...
It's also a great option if you can only find ONE tree... I've hung from the roof rack mount of my FJ crusier to a tree a couple times. Lenght of hang is also infinititely adjustable with the vehicle, too.
