I use my VW bus door frame from time to time. I did notice it scratched the paint a litttle though. However it is 37 year old paint.

I've considered tying to the roof rack on my Subaru Outback (not the crossbars, but the foot where it's attached to the care roof), though I'm not sure if I'd be overloading it and pull it right off the car (which would suck as I use the roof rack a LOT!)

I've tried it once for a short period of time, 10-15 min. I was at work and telling a friend about it and he didn't believe me. I pulled the work Jeep liberty close to a tree, rolled down passanger and rear windows and hung out for a bit. He was rather jealous of my comfortable seat.

I have been leary of slinging to the Thule towers. Don't think they were designed for that angle of stress. It is a lot easier to find 1 tree than 2 in some areas though.

I agree, and would apply it more broadly to all roof racks.

It's too easy to pass a strap all the way through a vehicle, close the doors on it, and hang from the entire body...why take a chance with a roof rack that is held in place with sheet metal screws?

Two years ago I traveled cross country and hung inside my Ford Explorer with a DIY hammock. I put one end out the back hatch and slammed it shut and did the same with the passenger door. I slept great.

Did it for the first time out of necessity in my parents yard. Only had one tree.

    Hanging from a car?

Just tested this today. Headed to a park in a couple weeks where the choices of trees may be limited and wanted to see that I could hang at least half of my hammock

Worked well, but was careful not to hop around for fear or tearing the seal or hurt the paint.
