Condensation with pad and dbl layer hammock?

Just got back from 200 miles on the Colorado Trail....only 185 left to finish next year!

I used a down UQ/TQ successfully this year after doing the first 105 miles two years earlier with a Walmart egg shell pad with a SPE/Mummy bag and sweating every night. The next trip will have sections without trees and I will have to go to ground. I'm wondering if I will still have condensation with a double layer hammock with a pad? I may just make the hammock with a "sacrificial" heavier bottom layer to go to ground. Or do I just suck it up and start making a tarp tent. I made a double layer hammock but never used it in cold weather. This year I experienced 30 degree lows and I sleep warm.

The CT rocks for a hammock....at least the first 300 miles. I saw no others using them and it was an attention getter for all those groundlings.

I've wondered about a combo ground cloth/hammock too! I'd hate to find a hammockable site and be sans hammock.

I don't think I'd risk my HH directly on the ground.

I've done very limited testing with a pad in a double layered hammock. The good news was that it was much more tolerable with the layer of nylon between me and the pad. I still woke-up a bit moist, but not soaked. I too am a warm sleeper and I'm just not sure there is anyway for us warm sleepers to use a pad without some sweat issues. That layer of fabric does do a nice job of wicking some of the moisture away from the sleeper though.

The HH underpad is very breathable. I haven't had any condensation issues until it gets cold enough that I need to add the space blanket to the mix.

What about just using a space blanket for your groundcloth? That should keep your hammock fabric from being torn on anything.

    New Walmart pad

HF Walmart pad 003.jpgI found a new pad at area Walmarts and bought one to try in a double layer hammock. Per the package it measures 26 x 70 and is 15 oz. The sheet is about 1/16" thick and the pads are 1/2". Not sure it will be warm enough for my CT hike (had 30 degrees several nights) but is should be flexible and wrap around me in the hammock. May need to use a SPE for width.
