I don't think there's any question about the 1" pipe being strong enough, but I wonder about the tees and els. Since none of the corners are braced, the fittings need to resist some considerable loads. I'm inclined to stick with Ed's design, which is well tested, but will be interested to follow this project with 1" pipe and fittings.
After talking to a friend of mine I'm thinking I'll just wait until I can find the 1.25 pipe in stock. He works at a gym and they used some of the 1 inch pipe for the pull-up bars. After about a year of hard use, he says one of the L joints had a small fracture in it. They started using the 1.25 inch after that and haven't had a problem since. However, they still have quite a few 1 inch bars up, which haven't had a problem, so it might have been faulty to begin with.

I'm 99% sure the 1 inch pipe would probably be okay, but I don't want to spend $100+ on a stand that *might* break on me down the road. Better safe than sorry.

Built one out of 1.25 pipe. Around $190.00 for everything from lowes. My question is how do you hang your hammock?

What about drilling a hole and using a eye-bolt?

You can just wrap your tree huggers around the pipe...

I always make a few wraps on both the horizontal and vertical posts near the corner. Really not necessary to go over the horizontal post, but it makes me feel better.

You could drill a hole through the vert parts of the pipe, say about 6" from the top and put a say 1/2 piece of pipe through the hole kind of like a marlin spike idea. Just a thought.

Doesn't drilling through galvanized pipe release a toxic smoke?

Dunno, but if it worries you, work in front of a fan, and drill with plenty of oil. Your bits will thank you.

I'm not crazy about drilling holes in the pipe, though. Make 'em small ones, if you do it.
