Ya beat me me to em... Those were just the stakes I was gonna post. We used them last weekend at a Camporee. They work well as long as the ground is not too wet. If that's the case nothin will hold...

BTW, do I spy MacLaren tartan and a Beaver totem? Wood Badge or bagpiper or all of the above?

EDIT: gues I shoulda looked at the age of this thread before I posted in... hehehehe

Check out the way this guy does his stakes, it may solve the problem you are having by adding pressure that won't allow the stakes to pull out of the ground.

I don't have any hangable trees in my yard, and I'd love to build one of these - mostly because it's the least expensive design I've seen without using free materials. I want it for testing out gear, but it'll have to be long enough to set up my tarp as well, say maybe 12 feet from attachment point to attachment point. I know you said the poles are five feet long. In your opinion, would that be high enough to get a proper hang without scraping the ground? If I get an answer soon, I'm ready to dive in and build one today!

Nevermind. I went ahead and built one anyway, and yes, five foot poles definitely make it tall enough to hang the hammock properly and to set up the tarp. I'm using some cheap nylon rope temporarily until I can order some more Amsteel Blue. I already broke on of the lines, but it held long enough to test it out. Like, the OP, 12 inch nails didn't hold for me, but canopy anchors seem to be, at least for now.

ETA: I had to set the supports on scraps of wood to keep them from driving into the ground.
