To clarify, it was the reservation ranger, not a BSA official or volunteer, that asked me very politely to remove my hammock. I suspect that they had had a variety of honest-to-goodness tree abuse incidents (we are talking about 10-18 year-old boys, after all) and the ranger was doing his best to preserve the health and beauty of the camp. So let's not rant on these nice folks.

Forgive my jumping to conclusions... Thats too bad the ranger was possibly lead to their conclusions from previous bad experience. Yep, I know what those kids can do- just finished working with a bunch of unruly kids at a school in NY.

If you use square 3/8 or better yet 1/2 bar stock (more surface are) and use two stakes per staking point.
Then cross at staking point I think you will have better luck.

    Yup.

Precut 24" rebar pins from the lumber yard are ridiculously cheap. So cheap, in fact, that if I can't get it out of the ground, I just drive it in below grade, and let rust take care of it.

+1 for the rebar. great stake material and since you're already planning on using a stand (= weight not an issue) you can use a 2 lb sledge to hammer into unruly soil. And a pair of ViseGrips for the ones that are hard to pull up.

BTW, I like your design. What are the angles of the conduit and the ropes? Also, how much do you weigh, if you don't mind me asking?

I didn't measure the angles but all ropes and both poles are at about a 45-degree incline. I tilted the poles inward as far as I could to transmit as much load through the poles as possible.

I weigh 245 lb, which is 30 lb less than 6 months ago.

Not sure I want to drag around sledge hammers and vise grips, but hey, when you're car camping...

Heading to Reliance, TN this weekend to do some whitewater rafting with the scouts. Perhaps I'll play with the setup there.

Update: Found stakes to use at Lowe's. They call them "contractor stakes" and come in various lengths. I bought 4 ea 3/4" x 18" stakes at about $2.50 per stake. Worked really well today, once I pounded them far enough into our rock-hard ground.

    Here's the stake:

I have to agree with the earlier rant, this policy is ignorant/stupid. It's a shame that that the environmentalist religion is producing so many extremist views.

I'm all for sustainability and being good stewards and all that, but this is just ridiculous overkill nonsense. How many buildings were at this site? How many roads crisscrossing the area?

Ok, anyway I got these stakes at the army surplus cheap, they are aluminum and very light, and offer much more holding that the typical nail types.

Oldgringo just a note about leaving in the ground. I worked as part of a surveying company here in Florida for a number of years. Re-bar is what most are using to mark property corners with a cap to identify who set it. Re-bar doesn't rust. We found them in swamps after them being there for at least 15 years and they were still solid.

What if instead of replacing the stakes with larger ones, you took pressure off of the stakes by the addition of a ridgepole to take the compression forces. Then the lines on either end would theoretically be primarily for stability of the end poles.
