    Hanging in a hotel

I'm going to California for some training and would love to hang while I am there. Anybody ever figure out how to hang in a hotel? I'm hoping that there is a balcony and I can tie off there.

I've hung on a hotel balcony before...once overlooking Monterey Bay and once overlooking the Potomac, watching the planes on final into Reagan National. I also hung off our bunk beds in the college dorm (1994-5)...they were heavy enough that they barely slid when I tied up. I've never seen furniture that heavy in a hotel, though.

So, you're going to be 'living it up at the Hotel (in) California'?

I think you're probably stuck with roughin' it on the balcony, unless you can slip a hammock stand into your checked baggage.

Fin posted on this a while ago. I went a googling and hit some of his pictures, go here.

One anchor point was a door between adjacent rooms---he was traveling with the guy in that room and so could open it....not sure where the other end attached.

I travel a lot and have looked for solid attachment points. I think doing something at the entry door with some sort of hardware might work (something more discrete than the line across that would be visible from the outside if one did it the way fin did on the interior door. But that other end. Haven't ever solved that puzzle.

my class of hotel doesn't have a balcony

Grizz, what if you made a steel bracket that went over the top of the door, only had say and inch showing on the outside and had a place to tie a line on the inside? I've often thought about driving the upper hinge pin up a 1/4" or so for a tie point. Most hotels have steel framed door jams. Then the other end becomes the problem. Window frames and sliding glass doors are too flimsy. Removing a picture from the wall and installing a screw eye is probably not a good option Will do some daydreaming next hotel stay.

I thought about doing that to the door, but if the door opens inwards then all the force will be on the latch...which is unlikely to hold an adult in a hammock. If you could get it on a door that opens the opposite way (like the other door in an adjoining room) then all the force would be on the frame, and it should work for that side.

I wonder how cheaply I could go to the local hardware store and get something to hang? When I get in the room I'll look around and see what the possibilities are.

I ALWAYS have a hammock in the bag when traveling; one never knows when it will be needed. Of all the hotels, motels, travel lodges, and motor lodges I've stayed in over the last few years, only a small handful of them allowed me a safe hang without doing some...errr...interior modifications. The times I've been lucky enough to score a balcony, it's always been too small to set the hammock.

I can usually find one attachment point, it's the second one the eludes me. I think Dutch should refocus his energies away from silly gizmos like those ridiculous Dutch Clips and the pure insanity that is the Bridgeskin. Then, he could come up with something that would truly benefit the community, like hardware for making no-impact hanging in hotel rooms possible. That is, if he really cared about us.
    Trust nobody!
