Doing it wrong: Pathfinder school's hammock suspension video.

I love Dave Canterbury, and love the Dual Survival show, but someone from his school is teaching one of the worst ideas for hammock suspension I've ever seen:

    Thoughts?

Edit: After reading the comments and listening to the discussion again, I'm disappointed that the guy who is producing training videos for a SURVIVAL SCHOOL doesn't know what a slipped half hitch is called. You'd think a detailed knowledge of knots would be par for the course.

    Ooops. Didn't catch that one.

It upset me more because it came from the Pathfinder School - a trusted survival training organization. I guess hanging your hammock that way won't kill you, but if I woke up after spending the night in something hung like that, my back would be killing me

I agree, I have enjoyed the videos on that channel a lot less since Dave went under contract with TV and had to stop.

Gosh golly, you guys have been doing it wrong all along. "String that baby up just as tight as you can get it, fold it under, and back 'er up!"

In his defense, he probably doesn't know any better, though he should have dome some more recon before posting an instructional video.

How many pairs of underwear do you own? Do you refer to them as "extras", simply because you're not wearing all of them as we speak?

Thankee Paul for the invite, they definetely need the info here on HF and I am betting that they will injest it into what they are teaching.

I agree with many of you...Wilderness outfitters and the Pathfinder school is a good place to go for learning and/or being introduced to wilderness awareness and survival skills, and Critter has a lot to learn about hammock suspension.

The wilderness Outfitters system has been a good one, but not when it comes to hammock stuff, it definetelly lacks. It has been one of the parts that I have chosen not to adapt, but instead have used it for a way of learning about what would make a good suspension system. That way even though I have been taught improper skills I have used my brain to discern what I am being taught from what it is that I actually do in the field. We must also keep in mind that we may not be hammock camping as a result of choice, but as a result of need, and in that case all of the rules may be different.

I also have been inclined not to like all of the videos on the wildernessoutfitters channel since Dave Canterbury has been away doing the Discovery Channel thing, but I have learned to adapt and overcome and to never give up on others and I accept what Dave and others on his YT channel have continued to do. I see Dave as another cottage industry guy, that just doesn't possess the hammock skills that others do, that's all.

I look at it this way....7 people go into the wilderness together...and 7 people come out of the wilderness together, even if someone is being carried....no matter what!

Has anyone sent along any recommendations about some of the better practices of hammock hanging?

I can see if you're in a true survival situation that some of the best practices might not be followed. Maybe that's the difference?

If you read his comment section 90% of the people say thanks for the good info. And then there are a few polite HF members that suggest he doesn't hang on dead trees. I for one think if you aren't going to use tree huggers then you should only use dead trees.
