I just wanted to thank you for your youtube series "We don't sew, we make gear" I've watched all of your videos and I must say you did an excellent job in demystifying the craft to us folk who don't want to be a tailor but just want to make our own gear. My wife and mother are both skilled seamstresses but neither is interested in tarp, hammocks, and the such. Thank you for providing this foundation for all of the folks in my position.

hello, I have an opportunity to buy a Bernina 1008 for $375. I've asked the questions that you list in the beginning (via e-mail on craigslist) good deal? bad ju-ju? anything specific to look for when I check it out? Also do you think this is a machine that could handle all the aspects of gear making?

Features are pretty important. Here are some things that have been missing on some of the machines I have lying around: 1. NO reverse ability (to backtrack a bit at the end of a long seam). A lack of zig-zag might matter to some if not many DIY folks. Variable stitch length (read: longer stitch length) as sometime you need to reduce the number of holes per inch you are making in the fabric. Look for a unit that will accept standard Singer-sized bobbin spools and machine needles (the latter being pretty darn important). Be certain you can find a thread-path chart for your prospective machine, especially if its older. ALSO: If you smell something burnt after a test sewing...the motor likely needs attention which can be as simple as brushes or...something much more intensive. LASTLY: I have had all the European and American made brands and found the a big name means nothing. My White sewing machine works far better for thin materials than my Pfaff. My older Singer better than my electronic Singer. You get the idea...
