    G'day from WA, too

Well, I didn't expect to find many other Aussies when I googled "hammock camping australia" ... and already I see at least 3 or 4 from "the left hand side". The best side, by the way.

    The bit about myself ...

Mostly walk the Bibbulmun Track, in bits for now - 220km down, 743 to go.
Car camp from a Mitsubishi Delica.
    Fish from the shore.
    Collect and use edged things.
    Enjoy bushcraft.
Do a bit of geocaching. (BTW - are you the same Gunn-Parkers?)

I ended up here because I'm looking to replace my hiking tent. A fellow knife enthusiast was extolling the virtues of his Hennessy Hammock, and it got me interested ...
Had I known I was stepping onto such a huge learning curve ...

Looks like I'm in the right place to start the research!

    Hello from the other WA

    MikeF,

    Welcome to the fora.

I know the learning curve can look intimidating at first, but this place is a wealth of information. I highly recommend you watch Shug's 10-part youtube series on hammocking for noobs. That will get you oriented and familiar with the language.

    Good searching,

    FS

    G'day!

Welcome to the house o' fun

BIG +1 for the Shug's vids on the tube of you. Absolute gold!

If we keep this up, we'll have to organise a west oz hang soon eh !?

Hope to see you dangling from a tree sometime.

Welcome from Oklahoma! I forgot what my Aussie call a closet, but you'll have to clean one out to store your hammocking gear if you stay on this forum. By the way, I ordered a book on the Kokoda Trail, and can't wait to read it!

    Thanks everyone.

FarStar - subscribed to Shug's vids, and on a roll there

Browny - definitely into a West Oz hang. I was going to write a "Sandgroper" hang, but that implies being a ground dweller.
I'm out on the Bib Track next weekend, and already I'm wishing I had a hammock to try.

Avalon - my generation calls it a wardrobe, or just a cupboard. My study (den?) closet is already full of my camping gear. I expect I shall be moving some of it on soon, esp the tent!
If you're interested, here's a link to a Kokoda documentary that screened here not long ago http://www.abc.net.au/tv/geo/documen...active/kokoda/. It's from our ABC (Australian Braodcasting Corporation - the govt owned media network). The online version looks like the full set that I watched on tv.

Poppabear - I think I already decided not to sleep on the ground last time I got out of my tent. I'm only in my mid-40's, but for some reason it just seemed oh so low and long way to stand up in the morning. In fact, when I'm car camping, I tend to put a large tarp over my single skin tent to give me the same weather protection benefits as you "hangers" do. Perhaps this is part of my evolutionary process?

I now have a 1,000,001 questions. Let the fun begin!

Thanks again, all of you, for the welcome. I'm looking forward to hanging out here (I bet no one's used that pun before, eh)

    Glad to have you aboard.

While there is a lot of information to research on this forum, I found it to be half the fun in selecting my rig.

    Enjoy...
