    Adding IX to a Shenandoah

I recently slept in my hammock and it got down to about -5C and I was cold using my JRB Shenandoah wil a 1/4 pad in my hammock and 2 car windshield reflectors. I am tempted to get a couple of insultex layers to add inside my shenandoah in the height of winter. Does anyone think it would work adding 2 layers of IX between my UQ and hammock and would it take me down to -2 to -5?

I think it would add 15*F or so... have done it myself with different down UQs, with the IX both inside and outside the down.

The IX UQ itself will get you to freezing, or close, depending on how cold you sleep. The IX UQ combined with the Shenandoah should work very well. I will probably work best if the IX is next to the hammock, and the whole rig is hung somewhat loosely, without gaps.

Hi Mac thanks for your response.

What would shipping to Australia cost if I were to get an IX UQ?

The Shenandoah is rated at +5C or a Summer quilt. Adding anything insulating will keep you warmer, but you may be starting with the wrong piece to begin with. Sort of like trying to cut onions with a hatchet when most any knife will do better.

I don't know about that... I had a KAQ, similarly rated, and supplemented it successfully. The supplement was not as effective as IX, but it was effective. IIRC, I was toasty below 20 *F with the combination.

I have no doubt that it will work. It's just that this particular quilt is a summer quilt. It sounds like he's almost wanting a deep 3 season quilt. Then again, perhaps not everyone likes giving up an entire room to store quilts, tarps and hammocks like I do.

Cost is a major factor for me. Plus its only down to freeZing and a bit below here max. A few months on really cold nights. I have a second hammock for friends and or my Mrs so have 2 uqs which can be used for most of the year is the best option for me. Would love to own many quilts.
Macs quilts are awesome and I am looking forward to receiving my first one.
Looking forward to having such a light uq to take when it is warmer!

There are advantages to not having a room full of quilts. For starters, you don't have to stand and stare at the pile as if picking the best gold club for your next shot.

I do like the notion of an IX UQ for the warmer months while being able to use it to boost a 3 season quilt down to nearly single digits F. I tend to spend fewer nights out once it gets hot here in the southeastern part of the US. I get hot during the day and don't get a chance to cool off until well into the night. Those are the times that a thin UQ would be nice once the temps drop just before midnight.
